Belgium in History

Widely popular for being the capital of Belgium, Brussels became a capital region only on June 1989. This city has bilingual speaking locals. Both French and Dutch signs are commonly found all over the area.

While in history, Brussels was officially founded in 979.  It became a commercial center due to its location near the shores of Senne-the trade route between Ghent, Cologne and Bruges. Though it is on the shores of Senne, there were only small risk of floods. A revolution took place in 1830 and the city experienced independence. It was on May 10, 1940 when the German Army bombed Brussels. The damage of the war lasted from 1944-1945.

The History of Lace

Most assumed that the origin of lace started in Ancient Rome. Manufacturing of lace actually started in Belgium. It was initiated by Charles V in fifteenth century when he ordered that lace making be thought in schools and on Belgian convents in the provinces. During this time, creation of lace was use to replace embroidery. Many styles of lace making were developed and there are two dominant techniques today. These are the Brussels Lace and Bobbin Lace.
